A rarely encountered Santiago ½ real. Santiago silver from 1797 is rarer date and is seldom seen. This is an even rarer variety with a spectacular misspelling of Charles’ name: CAOLUS instead of CAROLUS. A misspelling of the king’s name in the Spanish colonial ½ real series has happened at other mints. In 1773 Mexico city produced some pieces with “CAROLS” (pieces with the “CAROLS” spelling have also been reported dated 1776) and some Potosi pieces dated 1778 have the “CROLUS” spelling. The CAOLUS pieces appear in about half the pieces from Santiago dated 1797, but are in greater demand due to the error. A rare interesting early mint error piece that is seldom seen.
