Featured here is a very seldom seen 2 reales coin minted at Santa Fe de Bogota in Colombia. In 1771, a royal decree or “cedula” was issued that ceased the production of the old pillar type coins and began production of coinage featuring the portrait of the king, Charles III. Production began in 1772 and the featured piece was coined the following year. All Colombian silver coinage is scarce to rare, and all Charles III pieces are rare to extremely rare. The piece here is a decent example considering the rarity, unholed with some minor obverse graffiti. It is poorly struck with weakness on both the obverse and reverse, but is well centered. An extremely rare 2 reales with the Nuevo Reino mintmark, a rarely seen colonial minor.
