About this Site

www.SpanishColonialMinors.com is intended as an educational and research-based site for the minor milled coinage of the Spanish Colonial mints of the New World.  These mints include Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, and Durango in Mexico, Lima and Cuzco Peru, Potosi in Bolivia, Santiago Chile, Nueva Guatemala, and Nuevo Reino and Popayan in Colombia.  The focus of the site is minor milled coinage of the Spanish Empire, quarter real through four real, beginning in the mid-1730s through the cessation of Royalist mint activities at Potosi in 1825.  It is a fascinating period in North and South American history that is reflected in the most widely circulated coins of the region.

The goal of the website is to share information regarding these coins: feature rare and unusual examples, aid in the research of any Spanish Colonial minor series, and share website information and other outlets for the purchase of these coins.  With the current hot numismatic market, interest in foreign coins continues to increase and due to the circulation of these pieces in the early United States, many collectors who have previously only collected U.S. coinage, have begun to gravitate to these interesting and varied series.  Our hope is that this site will aid in the continued growth of collecting interest in Spanish Colonial minor coinage.
